News & Reports 2008

December 2008 - Wider Impact Consultancy delivers a positive independent evaluation of a Sure Start funding initiative delivered by Wigan Council.

Wigan Council
SureStart
The Tyldesley / Shakerley Learning & Employment for Parents / Carers project targets ‘hard to reach’, unemployed parents / carers of children under 5 years, assisting them in accessing learning and work opportunities to meet their individual needs.

The evaluation report of this excellent and innovative project delivers a number of findings and recommendations, which are aimed at enhancing delivery of this and potential roll out projects across the Borough of Wigan.

It is the view of Wider Impact Consultancy that others could learn from this project that supports Government objectives and the Sure Start national vision of ‘achieving better outcomes for all parents, increased opportunity to effectively participate in the labour market, ensuring pathways out of poverty and strengthening families and communities’. This clearly fits with outcomes required by ‘Every Child Matters’ relating to ‘achieving economic wellbeing’ with parents, carers and families supported in being economically active and with the Sure Start appropriate opportunities in employment, training and or education.

Lynne Davison, Team Manager Learning and Employment Services, Wigan Council, says, ‘We are delighted with the report produced by Wider Impact Consultancy, which has been delivered on time and within budget. We have been most impressed how they have ‘rolled up their sleeves’ and got on with the job following direction from ourselves. This is a first class and precise piece of work. We would have no hesitation in recommending Wider Impact Consultancy to others looking to commission similar types of work.

Edwin Lewis, Wider Impact Consultancy Director says we were delighted to play a role in supporting entrepreneurial students from the Sandon Business and Enterprise College at an innovative Enterprise Workshop held at the Chamber of Commerce.

We were supporting by local business 'experts', Aaliyah Consultancy, the Local Edition, Michelin Development and Hosting Systems.

As an added bonus, we were joined by students from the Ukraine on a study visit to the United Kingdom.

Supported by the 'experts', the students had a unique and exciting opportunity to present their ideas to a team of 'Dragons' and the winning team received a cash prize of £100 to develop their idea into reality.

There is no doubt such initiatives will play an important role in building bridges between business and education and helping shape our future entrepreneurs. You only have to look at the students faces to understand how valuable the day was.

June 2008 - Wider Impact Consultancy is delighted to deliver a comprehensive evaluation of a Youth Works programme on behalf of Groundwork Lancashire West & Wigan.

Youth WorksTitled ‘Diamonds in the Dust’, the evaluation highlights impressive outcomes achieved by dedicated Youth Works staff working along side young people living on the deprived Higher Folds Estate, Wigan that include youth crime reduced by 50%, anti-social behaviour cut by nearly 44%, arson reduced by 46% and criminal damage reduced by 29%.

Wider Impact Consultancy Director, Edwin Lewis makes a number of important recommendations, in this ground-breaking report, which includes the need for all agencies to work together, supporting, rather than blaming young people, if such impressive outcomes are to be sustained.

As Edwin points out, ‘Whilst these are impressive results, we have reported ‘bitter sweet’ outcomes, as the Youth Works Higher Folds programmes has since closed due to lack of continuation funding. We have all seen this before, but those with the power to make a lasting difference now really need to up their game.

The answers to street crime and issues linked to young people are under our noses, if we choose to understand what works and listen and trust young people.

I really recommend those charged with supporting young people and reducing street crime and anti-social behaviour take time to read this report and gain an understanding of what works when working with and supporting our young people’.
